Through a large number of user surveys, EaseUS released the second data recovery report. This report mainly analyzes and presents the main types of recovered data, including images, videos, documents, and camera brand data related to image and video recovery.
EaseUS Data Recovery Stats 1 mainly presents data related to systems and storage devices. This report delves into a comprehensive user survey of data recovery types, which engaged 864,257 participants, all of whom have recently utilized file recovery. The core content revolves around the varied file types users seek to recover, including photos, videos, and documents.
By studying these data, we aim to help users realize the prevalence, importance, and main direction of data recovery. We hope users learn coping strategies and options when facing data loss problems and enhance their data management capabilities and risk prevention awareness.

Based on the main file types recovered by users in our survey, the picture is the most commonly recovered file type at 56.15%. Video files follow closely behind at 33.07%, while documents, audio, and archives comprise smaller portions of the total files recovered.
Understanding the distribution of file types can provide valuable insights into how data recovery software can better meet users' needs and also can remind users of the most vulnerable files to protect in their daily lives or at work.

In nearly half a million photo recovery surveys, we found that the top 10 image formats are JPG, PNG, GIF, JPEG, CR2, BMP, SVG, NEF, ICO, and WMF. JPG and PNG are the two most common lost image file formats.
🧮JPG is the most common image type in recovered photos, accounting for 79.94%. It is a compressed format that sacrifices some quality for smaller file sizes, making it ideal for photographs and images with complex colors. Since JPG is a lossy compression format, if the original file is lost or damaged, the image quality may decrease, so people are more inclined to retrieve the original JPG file to maintain the best image quality.
🧿PNG files comprise the second largest group, accounting for 10.48%. This lossless format preserves the image's original quality, making it suitable for graphics and logos with transparent backgrounds. This indicates its importance in graphic and web design.
🔰Important scenarios for image loss include, but are not limited to, device failure (such as a hard disk crash), incorrect deletion, virus infection, or operating system error. In addition, some professional photographers may also need to recover photos in professional formats such as NEF (Nikon Native RAW format) or CR2 (Canon Native RAW format) due to camera memory card issues.
🧰Other formats, such as BMP, SVG, ICO, etc., although they are lower in overall proportion, users will still seek to recover pictures in these formats under certain circumstances.
💡In what ways can data recovery software help users with photo recovery?
With the increasing use of digital devices and the proliferation of image-based applications, the demand for reliable and efficient data recovery software continues to grow. We must focus on device compatibility for photo recovery, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, and even specialized devices like drones and action cameras. Developing software that seamlessly integrates with different devices will enable users to recover lost or deleted images regardless of the device they were created on.
Image recovery software should also cater to various application scenarios, from personal use to professional photography and videography. At the same time, the data recovery software should use advanced algorithms and technologies for image recovery, such as deep learning and artificial intelligence, which can significantly improve the accuracy and speed of recovery.

What are the common formats of video files that users lose? We surveyed 285,844 users, and the top 10 types are MP4, MOV, AVI, M2TS, MKV, WMV, MPG, MTS, 3GP, and SWF.
In terms of the percentage of each file type:
The high percentage of MP4 files can be attributed to its popularity as a widely used format for video playback across various devices and platforms. MOV files, primarily associated with Apple's QuickTime player, also have a significant presence due to their widespread use among Apple users.
While not as popular as the first two, AVI files still account for a sizable portion of the recovered videos, likely because they are compatible with many media players and editing software.
We also investigated what brands of cameras users used to shoot these videos. Canon, Nikon, and Sony are the main brands, accounting for over 80% of the market share. The specific data is as follows:
💡What should we do for video recovery?
The data show that MP4 is the most frequently recovered video format. After filming or video editing, if necessary, we can consider converting the video to the most versatile MP4 format in advance to enhance compatibility and future recoverability.
If you own a professional or special-purpose camera such as a DJI or GoPro, more frequent backups or higher levels of data protection are recommended, given the potentially unique nature of video captured by these devices. Once the video is lost, stop using the camera immediately to avoid overwriting the lost video. Then, powerful tools that perform particularly well in video recovery are chosen to retrieve lost data.

What document formats do people recover the most? According to our 69,670 user surveys, users have a diverse range of document formats, with PDF being the most prevalent, with 18,779 and a proportion of 26.95%. In addition to PDF, the top 10 file formats are DOCX, XLSX, TXT, DOC, XLS, INK, TMP, XML, and PPTX.

💡Observations and insights:
Documents are the third most important data type needing recovery. They are closely related to people's lives and are vital. Users should develop good file protection habits, set up automatic document saving, use antivirus software to protect computers from malware attacks, and regularly back up important files.
Once a document is lost, all read-and-write operations on the storage device should be stopped immediately to prevent new data from overwriting the lost document. Then, choose a reputable data recovery software, such as EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, and perform scanning and recovery operations according to the software's instructions.
Data recovery software needs to enhance compatibility and support for multiple formats in document recovery, ensuring that the latest versions of document formats (such as DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, etc.) can be effectively recovered. At the same time, the scanning algorithm can be optimized to improve the recognition and recovery capabilities of damaged, encrypted, or partially overwritten documents. In addition, support for document recovery on cloud storage platforms (such as Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.) can be added to meet the growing demand for recovering lost cloud documents.
