#1. Back Up BitLocker Recovery Key via Windows Settings

Recovery keys can be saved in various paths, depending on your installed Windows version. If you have a modern device with automatic encryption, the recovery key is most likely stored in your Microsoft account.

Step 1. Type Control Panel in the search bar > click Open > select System and Security > click BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Step 2. Locate your encrypted drive > select Back up your recovery key.

Step 3. Select where you want the key backed up > click Finish > wait patiently.

1️⃣Save to your Microsoft account:

  • If you log into your personal MS account, the key will be saved in your Microsoft Account's recovery keys library.
  • If you're using a PC managed by your work or school, the key can be automatically saved to your Azure AD account instead. That's why some users have reported that the BitLocker recovery key option is missing.

2️⃣Save to a USB flash drive: As the option implies, you can save your BitLocker recovery key to the USB drive. If your device requests the recovery key in the future, insert the USB and follow the on-screen instructions.

3️⃣Save to a file: You can store your recovery key as a plain text file on any device and open it in a text editor like Notepad if needed. Besides, you can copy the text file to your OneDrive Personal Vault for safe and secure storage.

4️⃣Print the recovery key: You can print the recovery key and put the printout somewhere secure.
