Why SD Card Showing up As 256MB Instead of 16 GB

I got myself a 16GB micro SD card and want to use it for my old camera. When I plug it into my camera, it only shows as 256MB and shows none of the files that are currently on it. Why is this happening, and how do I fix the problem? Thanks!

There are a few reasons why a 16GB SD card only shows 256MB:

  • Fake SD card.
  • Formatting issues.
  • Partition table corruption.

If your SD card is purchased from official store, the issue is probably caused by format issue or corruption.

First, you can check if the SD card contains any unallocated space that can be added to the existing partition:

Step 1. Connect the SD card to your computer.

Step 2. Right-click on the Start menu icon and open Disk Management.

Step 3. Right-click on your SD card and choose "Extend Volume" if there is unused free space.

If the extend volume option is greyed out, try formatting the SD card to exFAT or NTFS via the Format option in Disk Management.

However, if these don't work, you might need a professional disk manager tool like EaseUS Partition Master Free to check the SD card for corruption.

You can follow the steps here to check and repair its file system:

Step 1. Connect the SD card to your PC and open EaseUS Partition Master.

Step 2. Right-click on the partition of the SD card, choose "Advanced" > "Check File System" and tick "Try to fix errors if found."

Step 3. Click "Start" to begin.

This should help you fix the SD card and show its correct capacity.
