How to Change Disk 1 to Disk 0 or Disk 0 to Disk 1?

Hello, My computer had a standard HDD hard drive. I just switched to an SSD. Disk 0 refers to the original HDD, and Disk 1 refers to the new SSD. Disk 1 has Windows OS. How can I switch the two disks so that my SSD drive becomes Disk 0? Regards.

Yes, you can switch disk numbers from Disk 1 to Disk 0 by:

  • Clone and migrate OS to another disk
  • Physically swapping the disks
  • Changing the disk order in your system's BIOS or disk management utility

Note: However, to avoid potential data loss, it is recommended that you back up your data before making any changes to disk configurations.

Way 1. Migrate Windows OS

The first drive with the Windows OS installed is typically listed as Disk 0. You can migrate your OS to a different drive, then set it as the boot drive in BIOS. EaseUS Partition Master Professional can simplify this complicated process for you. With just a few clicks, you can automatically migrate Windows to another disk and set it as the boot drive:

Way 2. Physically Swap Two Disks

Option 1. Adjust physical connections:

  • Disk order is often determined by the physical ports your devices are plugged into on the motherboard.
  • Try unplugging all drives except the one you want, such as Disk 0, booting up, and reconnecting the other drives one by one.

Option 2. Swap SATA cables:

  • Turn off your PC, open the case, and swap the SATA cables connecting the drives to the motherboard.
  • This may change which drive is recognized as Disk 0.

Way 3. Change Disk Numbers via Windows Registry Editor (advanced users)

  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI in Registry Editor.
  • Find the subkey for the disk you want to change, create a new DWORD value named "DiskNumber", and set its value to the desired number.
