I have an iPhone 12 running iOS 15.5, an M1 MacBook Air running Monterey 12.4, and a 4th-gen iPad Air with 15.3.1. I also have Time Capsule running backups regularly on my Air, and my iPhone backs up to iCloud. I meant to delete a different iMessage thread but accidentally deleted the thread with my daughter instead. Even if I were to restore my Air backup from Time Capsule, would iMessages sync to iCloud and delete the thread again? Is there a place in Finder that would have my stored iMessages? Even if I could get part of it back from before syncing with iCloud, that would still be better than nothing.
If you use iMessage on your MacBook Air and have been syncing messages with iCloud, you may be able to recover some of your deleted text messages.
Here's how you can attempt to recover your messages:
iCloud Backup: If you have backed up your messages to iCloud, you can restore your backup. Remember that this will restore your MacBook Air to its state when you last backed up, which could mean losing any changes or additions since then.
Third-party Recovery Tool: Some third-party tools, such as EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard for Mac and PhoneRec, can recover permanently deleted iMessages. However, these tools are not free, and success is not guaranteed.
Time Machine: Time Machine is your Mac's built-in backup feature. You may recover your deleted text messages if you have been using it to back up your data.
