How to Convert CD or DVD to ISO on Mac

MacOS comes with built-in features for creating disk images from CD/DVD. The Disk Utility tool, which can create DMG (Mac stores disk images in DMG format) files from CDs, is available on MacOS. By default, the disk image is stored as DMG.

DMG roughly translates as disk images. It is unique to Macs and does not support reading or writing on other OSs. Since DMG files are unique to macOS, they do not support other OS. The following guide helps you convert a CD/DVD into an ISO file. Also, find out how to convert the DMG files to ISO later in this section.

Step 1. Create a new folder (name is something like ISO image, etc).

Step 2. Find the disc (CD/DVD) contents and copy them to the new folder.

Step 3. Navigate to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.

Step 4. Go to File > New Image > Image from the folder.

Step 5. Select the folder you created earlier and set a file name for the disk image.

Step 6. Change the image format to DVD/CD master and click Save. Wait for the process to complete and click Done.

The process above creates a DMG file. To convert it to an ISO file, follow the below steps.

Step 1. Open the terminal and use the cd command to switch to the directory/folder the DMG file is saved to:

Step 2. Execute the following command to convert the DMG file to ISO.

  • hdiutil convert [filename].dmg -format UDTO -o [filename].iso

Replace the [filename] with the DMG file. Once the OS converts the file to ISO format, the ISO file is ready to mount and open.

How to Create ISO Image from CD Linux/Ubuntu

If you have Linux/Ubuntu, you have two options: the built-in disk management tool and the terminal. If you can manage command-line tools, you can go with the terminal.

Method 1. Create an ISO image file from CD with dd

Insert the CD/DVD on the computer. Ensure the media is not mounted on the device. Depending on the Linux version you are using, execute the command below:

  • sudo umount /dev/cdrom/

or

  • sudo umount /mnt/cdrom/

or

  • sudo umount /media/[username]/[volume_label]

Now, without mounting the disk, execute the comment below to create an ISO image.

  • sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/[username]/cdrom.iso

Note: Replace the username with the Linux username.

After executing the command, wait for the disc to stop spinning. Then, you will have the CD in ISO image format on the drive.

Method 2. Create an ISO image file from CD with Disks

Linux has a disk utility named Disks. This feature helps us create ISO files from a CD/DVD.

Step 1. Launch the Disks app after you insert the optical drive (CD/DVD).

Step 2. If the OS recognizes the disc, it will appear on the left panel.

Step 3. Click Stop to unmount it, click the three dots above, and select Create Disk Image.

Step 4. Give it a file name, change the extension to ".iso" from ".imo," and set the location before clicking Start Creating.

Step 5. Now, wait for the process to complete. After completing it, close the Disks app and eject the disk.

To Wrap Things Up

Once you create an ISO file, you can store it on a hard drive, USB, or the network. The disc image is available for use. So, that's all about how to create ISO image from CD or DVD on various operating systems. If you are facing issues with the CD or creating the ISO file, it is better to back up the Windows System and drive content in advance. With EaseUS Todo Backup, creating a bootable rescue disk becomes a three-step process. Try it now, and protect your data.
