Managing partitions is a colossal task, especially shrinking, growing up, editing, deleting, and more. GParted, a graphically intuitive software, helps you manage the partitions on your PC for free. The post from EaseUS details the GParted clone partition procedure. Look at the procedure, and if you find it complicated, check the EaseUS Disk Copy, a free GParted Alternative.

What Is GParted

GNOME Partition Editor, or GParted, is a free partition manager. Its GUI allows you to resize, copy, and move partitions. Another USP is the ability to manipulate the file system on the partitions. GParted is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.

GParted can perform actions like creating or deleting partitions, resizing, moving, copying, and more. The software is quite powerful as it can work efficiently with file systems and helps clone a partition with another. The other features help organize/reorganize disk data, create new space for OC, copy data on hard disks, etc.

How to Clone Partition via GParted

GParted cloning works just like copy and paste. We have to right-click on the partitions, copy the content, and paste it into the destination drive. Since GParted partition copy works at the file-system level, it clones hard disks of different sizes if the destination drive/partition storage is more than the source drive/partition.

So, let us see how to clone a partition to another using GParted. Here's something you need to keep in mind before starting the cloning process with GParted:

Notice:
1️⃣The destination partition you want to copy to should not be mounted.
2️⃣Trying to clone right after you install the GParted does not work. You have to boot the PC from GParted Live CD before you start.
3️⃣The destination partition should be larger than the source, or the copy fails.

Step 1. First, you have to download the GParted ISO files and burn them to a CD.

Step 2. Now, keep the CD with GParted ISO files in the PC's CD drive.

Step 3. Invoke the BIOS Settings and change the boot order to boot the PC from the GParted Live CD.

Step 4. As soon as the PC boots from the GParted Live CD, the screen below will appear. It will be set to GParted Live by default.

select GParted Live default settings

Step 5. The next screen asks you to select the Kepmap from the list. Select "Don't touch keymap" and continue.

click Don't touch keymap

Step 6. Select the default language, mode, and settings and press Enter.

Step 7. The GParted window will open with all the partition details. Right-click on the partition you want to copy and select "Copy" from the options.

Step 8. To paste the content, choose an unallocated partition. Right-click on the disk and click on the "Paste" button.

Step 9. The paste button will invoke a window that asks you to define the unallocated space you want to use. You can drag the arrow on the top to resize the disk space if the storage is insufficient.

Step 10. Click on Paste at the bottom and apply it to start the partition cloning on the hard drive (SSD/HDD).

GParted Alternative Free Download to Clone Partition

As discussed before, if you want to clone a large partition to a small one, GParted fails to do so. Even if you try to shrink the partition, you can see the Paste function greyed out. If you are stuck on GParted and cannot copy the partition to a smaller disk issue, it is time to look for GParted alternatives.

The GParted clone partition feature is old and incompatible with modern-day hard disk partitions. EaseUS Disk Copy is software capable of cloning partitions regardless of size. It's very simple: download the software and clone the partition. There is no need to boot the PC with an old-fashioned CD, and it lets you clone a hard drive with multiple partitions easily and quickly.

Disk Copy offers flexible options for cloning disk partitions. You can transfer data from one SSD to another and clone only the space used to a smaller disk. Bit-for-bit cloning (used and unused) is the best option for replicating the entire drive and cloning Windows. Download the software now, and follow the procedure below to clone partitions.

1. Download, install and run EaseUS Disk Copy on your PC.

Click Partition Mode and select the source partitions that you want to copy or clone. Click Next to continue.

Select source partition to clone

2. Select the target partition where you want to clone/copy the source partition to and click Next to continue.

Check and edit the partition layout: Autofit the disk, Copy as the source or Edit disk layout.
Autofit the disk is recommended.

  • Copy as the source option will copy/clone the same layout of partitions from your source disk to the destination disk.
  • Edit disk layout allows you to manually resize or move partition layout on the destination disk.
Select the destination partition to clone or copy partition

3. Click OK if the program asks to erase data on the destination partition.

FAQs on Copy Partition GParted

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about GParted partition cloning.

1. How do I copy a partition to a smaller disk in GParted?

Resize the partitions if you want to copy a partition to a smaller disk with GParted. GParted can only clone a smaller partition to a large one, but you need to shrink the source disk to achieve the vice-versa.

2. Is it safe to resize partition with GParted?

Resizing partitions with GParted can be tricky. The process of protecting data is not entirely streamlined, and if there is a power cut in between, it can be worse. So, make a backup before trying to resize partitions with GParted.

3. Is copying a partition the same as cloning?

No, they are entirely two different things. Cloning creates a new version of a definition. It duplicates the drive's filesystem, partitions, metadata, and slack space. On the other data, copying creates a new definition, a similar-looking file.

4. Can you clone drives with GParted?

Yes, GParted can clone drives. GParted uses the copy-paste gesture to copy files. The trick is that GParted copies partitions on the file-system level, making clone drives possible.

EaseUS Disk Copy
